You May Be Eligible for Japanese Permanent Residence After Only One Year in Japan
Many foreign nationals assume that obtaining Japanese Permanent Residence (“PR”) requires living in Japan for many years. In some cases, however, that assumption is incorrect.
Under Japan’s Special Highly Skilled Professional Program, commonly referred to as the “J-Skip” program, certain highly compensated professionals may become eligible to apply for Permanent Residence after only one year of residence in Japan.
You may qualify if you fall into either of the following categories:
1. Individuals Holding a Master’s Degree or Higher and Earning Annual Compensation of at Least JPY 20 Million
This category often includes:
- Senior executives at multinational corporations;
- Investment bankers and financial institution executives;
- Researchers and senior professionals in the technology sector; and
- Global business leaders with advanced academic credentials.
2. Individuals with More Than Ten Years of Professional Experience and Annual Compensation of at Least JPY 20 Million
This category frequently includes:
- Corporate officers and senior management personnel;
- Experienced professionals in finance and information technology; and
- Highly compensated specialists with substantial industry experience.
One of the most common misconceptions we encounter is the belief that Permanent Residence remains years away simply because an individual does not meet the point requirements for Highly Skilled Professional status.
In reality, some foreign nationals who do not qualify under the traditional Highly Skilled Professional point system may nevertheless be eligible for Permanent Residence through the J-Skip framework.
This is particularly true for executives of foreign companies and highly compensated professionals, many of whom are unaware that they may already satisfy the statutory requirements.
Importantly, Japanese language proficiency is not a requirement under the J-Skip program.
If you hold an advanced degree, have significant professional experience, and earn a high level of compensation, it may be worthwhile to revisit your qualifications.
You may be much closer to Japanese Permanent Residence than you think—perhaps only one year away.
