Japan PR application with your family

Can My Spouse and Children Obtain PR in Japan If They Apply with Me?

Yes, if the primary applicant’s PR application is approved and family members meet immigration requirements, they can obtain PR simultaneously.
How to Apply for PR with Your Family
If you (the main applicant) are residing in Japan, your spouse and children on dependent visas may also apply for permanent residency simultaneously, provided they fulfill immigration requirements.
Family members of a PR holder typically receive a shorter PR validity period (10 years). Applicants holding dependent visas (spouse or child) are eligible to apply as well.
For example, if a husband holds an Engineer Visa and his wife and son hold Dependent Visas, all family members can apply together. The family’s PR approval will depend upon the husband’s successful application.
However, under the HSP-PR Program (80P+), while the main applicant can secure PR after only one year, family members usually must fulfill longer residency requirements. There are cases where the primary applicant receives PR, but their family members may not yet qualify (Immigration Bureau Q&A).
Requirements for Spouse and Children (Simultaneous Application)
For simultaneous PR applications:
- Spouse: Must be married for at least 3 years, continuously residing in Japan for at least 1 year, and hold a 3-year or 5-year residence card.
- Children (including adopted children – 特別養子): Must continuously reside in Japan for at least 1 year and possess a 3-year or 5-year residence card. A one-year card is insufficient.
Summary of Requirements:
- Spouse: Married at least 3 years and continuously staying in Japan at least 1 year.
- Biological/Adopted Children: Continuously staying in Japan at least 1 year.
- Residence card validity: 3-year or 5-year status required.
In addition, strict compliance regarding income, tax payments, social insurance, and legal adherence is necessary for the entire family.
If the primary applicant obtains PR first, family members can apply later upon fulfilling the requirements (residence status of family if only the parent has PR).
